Master of Public Health


The Master of Public Health (“MPH”) Program will provide students with a sound academic background to practice competently as a generalist in public health. Students will complete coursework to attain requisite depth and breadth in the five core areas of public health knowledge including biostatistics, epidemiology, environmental health sciences, public health services and social and behavioral sciences.

Admissions Requirements

Applications are accepted for admission into the MPH Program for the Fall Semester only. There are no Winter, Spring or Summer Semester admissions. The preferred application deadline is March 15.

  • Completed Application for graduate admission to the MPH Program and fee.
  • Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Completion of course in statistics with minimum grades of ‘C’.
  • Statement of intent - Include a statement of professional interest and related goals in public health not to exceed 1000 words in length. This statement of professional interest must include the following: (a) preparation and background for the MPH program, (b) career goals in public health, (c) basic reasons for choosing a career in public health, (d) special qualities and talents that would enhance success in your public health career, (e) research interests, (f) professional interests, and (g) reasons for applying to Saginaw Valley State University’s MPH program.
  • International applicants: TOEFL score of 92 or higher or IELTS score of 7.0 or higher
  • One letter of recommendation, preferably from educators or employers. The letter of recommendation is waived if the student is a graduate of SVSU’s Bachelor’s of Public Health Program.

Meeting minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission. Admission decisions are determined by the program coordinator.

Transportation and Fees:

The student is responsible for providing transportation to and from all courses and/or fieldwork experiences. Students are required to enroll in a 3 credit fieldwork experience and should be prepared to meet their own living expenses, transportation costs and tuition throughout.

Program Requirements: 

The MPH program at SVSU consists of 30 credits of required courses. The curriculum includes a Public Health Field Experience and Capstone Project.

A final grade point average of 3.00 is required for graduation. No credit toward graduation is granted for courses with grades below “C. ” A student may be dismissed from the program if the cumulative GPA falls below 3.00 after 12 credits have been accumulated at SVSU.

The minimum number of credits that must be completed at SVSU within the MPH curriculum is 24.
