Degree Requirements (33 cr)

The Master of Science in Health Administration and Leadership provides interdisciplinary preparation for students pursuing a career in administration and leadership of health or human services organizations. The program includes theoretical and experiential learning opportunities. Core courses provide a sound foundation in health and organizational management and leadership.

Objectives

Graduates of this program will acquire knowledge and skill in:

Improvements implemented to transform health and human services systems at the macro and microsystem levels
Value of health information technology to the healthcare organization
Art and science of management and leadership of health or human services organizations
Community development for organizational and system health
Organizational process improvement and project planning
Ethical, legal, and regulatory aspects of leadership practice in health and human services
Population health, community health needs assessment and community benefit
Managerial finance and healthcare reimbursement

Executive Health Care Leader Track

This program is designed exclusively for clinicians, physicians, advanced practice providers, and current health care administrators.

Admission Requirements

1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university, with a cumulative GPA of 3.00 and attestation as identified below. For Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers with staff privileges, a completed Credentials Verification Form from Medical Affairs verifying current State of Michigan licensure and staff privilege in good standing. For administrators, a completed Credentials Verification Form from Human Resources verifying a bachelor’s degree earned from an accredited university.

2. A completed graduate application.

3. Recommendation Letter. For physicians and Advanced Practice Providers, the letter should be provided from the Vice President of Medical Affairs, Chief Executive Officer or an executive representative from the physician group. For administrators, a Letter of Recommendation should be provided from someone within the reporting chain of command.

In required HS and LS courses, students must earn a grade of “B” or better to remain in good standing. The minimum credits that must be completed at SVSU within the MSHAL program curriculum is 24. Applicants may petition to waive LS 580 and HS 510 if they satisfactorily completed a provider leadership professional program approved by the program coordinator.

Students accepted into the MSHAL program may earn a Health Care Leadership Certificate after completing the following:

HS 600 - US Health & Human Services Systems 3 cr
Choose one additional course from the following:
HS 510 - Accreditation Process Improvement 3 cr
