Teacher Education Program
The SVSU College of Education offers a traditional teacher preparation program for students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree or higher and wish to complete university and state requirements to obtain teacher certification in the State of Michigan in elementary education (grades K-8) or secondary education (grades 6-12 or K-12).
Program candidates must be admitted to SVSU and submit a separate application and supporting materials for consideration of admission in to the Teacher Education Program. The steps leading to a recommendation for teacher certification are:
• Fulfill application requirements for admission to the University;
• Successful completion of State required Michigan Test for Teacher Certification in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics basic skills test;
• Successful completion of State required Michigan Test for Teacher Certification in declared content area major(s) and/or minor(s) prior to applying to the Teacher Education Program;
• Gain admission into the Teacher Education Program;
• Successfully complete all course requirements in declared major(s), minors(s), and professional studies, including submission of assessments from professional studies to an electronic portfolio storage system;
• Attain acceptance and successfully complete student teaching.
In addition, candidates for teacher certification must complete any new requirements established by the Michigan’s State Board of Education.
All interested candidates must attend an informational seminar prior to scheduling an appointment with a certification advisor in the College of Education. The seminar dates are available online HERE.
