Overview
Occupational therapy is the only profession that helps people across the lifespan to do the things they want and need to do in their everyday life. Occupational therapy practitioners enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest by promoting health, wellness, and quality of life. Occupational therapy practitioners have a holistic perspective, where the individual is the center of the therapy team. When you join the Occupational Therapy program at SVSU, you receive an education that prepares you to be an entry-level practitioner.
The Occupational Therapy Program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 7501 Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 510E, Bethesda, MD 20814. AOTA’s phone number is (301) 652-6611. Students successfully completing all requirements for both the undergraduate and graduate portions of the occupational therapy program (including all fieldwork) leading to the Master of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy, will be eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for Occupational Therapy administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be an Occupational Therapist, Registered (OTR). Most states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.
Freshman Admission to the Occupational Therapy Program:
A limited number of qualified incoming freshman students will be accepted for guaranteed admittance into the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy program. To be eligible for consideration as a freshman direct admit, students must,
- Have a minimum high school GPA of 3. 5 or better
- Complete Freshman Direct Admit contract and email to Program Director.
How Does the Program Work?
If selected, as a Freshman Direct Admit student at SVSU, you are guaranteed a seat in the occupational therapy (OT) program when one is available, after you have completed the prerequisite courses and have maintained at least a 3. 3 cumulative college GPA at SVSU, including any dual enrollment and early/middle college GPA from schools you have previously attended. Students will be considered with the regular applicant pool if they do not maintain the required GPA.
