The Department of Health Sciences supports the University vision to be Michigan’s leading learning community in addition to being one of the finest in the nation. We share in the College of Health and Human Services’ commitment to fostering lifelong learners, skilled practitioners and dedicated leaders. Our mission is to promote growth and development opportunities for students pursuing preparation in health careers. Faculty from multiple disciplines assist students as they explore the human condition and health issues of diverse and global populations. They create an environment that fosters excellence through teaching, learning, research, and service.
The Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) major within the Health Science department prepares students for a professional career in laboratory medicine. Graduates of the program are eligible for national certification and may seek employment in a clinical pathology laboratory. Our state-of-the-art facilities house modern classrooms, as well as research and analysis laboratory spaces. The Medical Laboratory Science program has a dedicated laboratory that provides clinical space for the professional level students. The lab contains instrumentation, microscopes, and various lab supplies to assist students in learning the fundamentals of medical laboratory science. In addition, through their practicum at various hospital laboratories in Michigan, our students gain needed experiences to improve patients’ care.
The new neuroscience laboratory consists of over 3,000 square feet of specialized research spaces including a small animal vivarium, surgical suite, behavioral space (with a wide array of behavioral equipment) and histological and microscopy laboratories. The exceptional facilities and engaged faculty provide opportunities for our students to be involved in all aspects of health science research; from pathology and laboratory science to cutting-edge neuroscience. Furthermore the Health Science department partners with several local, national and international community health organizations to offer quality field experiences, study abroad and research opportunities to its students. Through working with the elderly in local long-term facilities, gaining clinical knowledge while interning in medical laboratories, or delivering health care services to vulnerable populations at village health clinics in Africa, health science students apply specialized knowledge to promote social changes and impact the lives of others.
