Autism Spectrum Disorder (K-12) Endorsement

Certified teachers can receive an endorsement to teach in Special Education programs requiring approval in Autism Spectrum Disorder by completing the required courses within the endorsement programs listed below. Michigan Special Education Administrative Rules require teachers to complete a minimum of 30 credits and a minimum of 8 weeks of student teaching in the specific area of impairment for initial special education endorsements. A minimum of 30 credits (half of which must be unduplicated credits) with not less than 180 hours of practical experience in the specific area of impairment is required for each additional endorsement. Please contact your faculty advisor or the certification officer in the College of Education for additional information.

Special Education Core (15 cr)


The Special Education Core is taken by candidates in all Special Education K-12 Endorsements (i.e., ASD, CI, LD).

Autism Spectrum Disorder Endorsement Core (12 cr)


Candidates pursuing an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Endorsement will complete the following endorsement cognate courses:

Required Clinical Experience (4-6 cr)


Students must take required clinical experiences that align with their current certification. See below.

For Initial Special Education Endorsement (6 cr):


For candidates seeking initial special education endorsement (i. e., candidates who are currently seeking their first special education endorsement).

For Subsequent Special Education Endorsement (4 cr)


For candidates seeking subsequent special education endorsement (i. e., candidates who already have at least one special education endorsement and are adding an additional endorsement to an existing teaching license).
