Special Education: Master’s in the Art of Teaching (M.A.T.)

Graduate level candidates may select from the following options:

  1. Master’s Degree with a Special Education Endorsement: Graduate candidates have the option of earning an endorsement in special education (Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cognitive Impairment, and Learning Disability) while earning a Master’s Degree in Special Education.

  2. Master’s Degree without earning a Special Education Endorsement

MAT Degree Requirements

The Special Education MAT program consists of a core of 36 credits graduate level courses. 6 credits Foundational Coursework, 15 credits Core Special Education Coursework, 12 credits are Cognate/Electives, 3 credits are Capstone. Candidates should meet with a Faculty Advisor to determine their planned program.

Admission requirement:

Graduate Admission for Education  

Required Foundation Courses (6 cr)


All candidates will complete the Foundation Courses:

Capstone (3 cr)


All Candidates will complete the following course:

Special Education Endorsements


Certified teachers may receive an endorsement to teach in Special Education programs requiring approval in either Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cognitive Impairment, or Learning Disabilities, by completing the required courses within the endorsement programs listed below as cognate courses. In addition, students seeking a special education endorsement must complete student teaching requirements associated with an initial or subsequent special education endorsement. 

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Endorsement Specialty Sequence (12 cr)


Candidates pursuing an MAT in Special Education with Endorsement in Autism Spectrum Disorder must complete the following courses as cognate courses:

Cognitive Impairment (CI) Endorsement Specialty Sequence (12 cr)


Candidates pursuing an MAT in Special Education with Endorsement in Cognitive Impairment must complete the following courses as cognate courses:

Learning Disabilities (LD) Endorsement Specialty Sequence (12 cr)


Candidates pursuing an MAT in Special Education with Endorsement in Learning Disability must complete the following courses as cognate courses:

Required Clinical Experience: (4-6 cr)


All Candidates seeking an initial or subsequent special education endorsement with or without their MAT must complete the Required Clinical Experience as follows:

For initial special education endorsement (6 cr):


For candidates seeking initial special education endorsement (i.e., candidates who are currently seeking their first special education endorsement).

For subsequent special education endorsement (4 cr):


For candidates seeking subsequent special education endorsement (i.e., candidates who already have at least one special education endorsement and are adding an additional endorsement to an existing teaching license).
