The ADN to BSN Concurrent pathway, offered within SVSU’s RN to BSN program, is designed for students actively enrolled in Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) courses at a partnership community college while simultaneously completing BSN-required general education courses, electives, and statistics through SVSU.
- These foundational courses prepare students for upper-level BSN core nursing courses, which begin after completing their ADN, passing the NCLEX and earning RN licensure.
- Before beginning upper-level BSN core nursing courses, students must hold an active, unencumbered Michigan RN license; or students may hold an active, unencumbered out-of-state RN license that has been formally approved by the SVSU Nursing Department. Approval of out-of-state licenses is granted only for students from one of SVSU’s formally partnered community colleges and is considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with SVSU’s RN to BSN Coordinator.
- This pathway enables students to earn required SVSU credits during their ADN studies. They complete the remaining semesters of the BSN degree, online and typically part-time, while working as an RN.
Summary of Degree Requirements:
To complete the degree requirements, an ADN to BSN Concurrent student must earn:
- 120 total credits required for graduation, of which 30 must be from SVSU, including:
- Completion of University General Education requirements.
- 9-credits in upper-division electives.
- Completion of 1 approved statistics course.
- 15-credits of core Nursing courses.
Credits earned in basic skills courses numbered below the 100-level are not applicable toward the 120 credits required for graduation; in contrast, eligible articulation and transfer credits are included in that 120-credit requirement.
Admission Process for ADN to BSN Concurrent Students
SVSU’s ADN to BSN Concurrent pathway within the RN to BSN program is a two-step admission process designed to facilitate students as they earn their Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) while beginning coursework toward their Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). After completing the ADN and obtaining RN licensure (see limitations in program description above), students transition from the ADN to BSN Concurrent pathway to the RN to BSN pathway of the program, to finish their BSN degree.
Step 1: Admission to the ADN to BSN Pathway (Concurrent enrollment)
Students may be admitted to the ADN to BSN Concurrent pathway while concurrently enrolled in a partner ADN program. This admission allows students to begin BSN coursework while completing their ADN. To do so, you must meet the following:
- Admission and good standing in a partnership Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, including completion of required Anatomy and Physiology coursework.
- Cumulative GPA of a 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher from all colleges and universities attended.
- Completion of the SVSU General Application and admission to SVSU.
What This Means: ADN students who meet the admission requirements may begin foundational BSN coursework while completing their Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), positioning them for a seamless transition into the RN to BSN pathway of the program upon ADN completion and RN licensure.
Step 2: Admission to the RN to BSN Pathway (Post-ADN Completion)
After earning the ADN and passing the NCLEX, students transition to the RN to BSN pathway of the program to complete upper-level BSN coursework. To do so, you must meet the following:
- Minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) across all college coursework.
- Hold an active, unencumbered Michigan RN license; or an approved out-of-state RN license as outlined in the program description above (following ADN graduation).
- Work with SVSU’s RN to BSN Coordinator to create an approved plan of study, which includes students goals and individualized plan for program completion.
- Successfully complete NURS 301 with a grade of a C (2.0 GPA) or better.
- Submit the formal RN to BSN application during enrollment in NURS 301.
What This Means: Admission into the RN to BSN pathway allows students to progress through the remaining BSN curriculum and graduate with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
