Nursing - RN to BSN Pathway

SVSU’s RN to BSN pathway is designed for a student who has graduated from an accredited school of nursing and holds an active, unencumbered Michigan RN license; or students may hold an active, unencumbered out-of-state RN license that has been formally approved by the SVSU Nursing Department. Approval of out-of-state licenses is granted only for students from one of SVSU’s formally partnered community colleges and is considered on a case-by-case basis in consultation with SVSU’s RN to BSN Coordinator. This flexible approach to completing the BSN degree meets the needs of working professionals.

Summary of Degree Requirements:

To complete the degree requirements, an RN to BSN student must earn:

  • 120 total credits required for graduation, of which 30 must be from SVSU, including:
    • Completion of University General Education requirements.
    • 9-credits in approved upper division electives.
    • Completion of 1 approved statistics course.
    • 15-credits of core Nursing courses.

Credits earned in basic skills courses numbered below the 100-level are not applicable toward the 120 credits required for graduation; in contrast, eligible articulation and transfer credits are included in that 120-credit requirement.

Admission Process for RN to BSN Students:

To be eligible for admission to the RN to BSN pathway, you must meet the following:

  • Hold an active, unencumbered Michigan RN license, or an approved out-of-state RN license as outlined in the program description above.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of a 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher from all colleges and universities attended.
  • Completion of the SVSU General Application and admission to SVSU.
  • Work with SVSU’s RN to BSN Coordinator to create an approved plan of study, which includes student goals and individualized plan for program completion.
  • Successfully complete NURS 301  with a grade of a C (2.0 GPA) or better.
  • Submit the formal RN to BSN application during enrollment in NURS 301 .

General Education

  • RN to BSN students will be advised which general education courses transfer from partnering colleges based on transripts and articulation agreements.
  • Most RN to BSN students will need to take:
    • One of SVSU’s 4 credit statistics courses (meets GE Cat. 3).
    • Two Communication Intensive (CI) courses  from GE Cat. 2 through Cat. 8 (The CI courses are designated with an! after the course number).

Required Upper Division or Graduate Level Electives (9-credits)

  • Select approved 300-400 level courses appropriate for professional development and continuing education, and/or from a list of selected graduate nursing courses.
  • Up to nine credits of graduate nursing credits may be taken after earning the ADN degree and becoming a licensed RN. This fast-track access to graduate nursing program courses helps academically capable students to meet both BSN elective credit requirements and nursing graduate program requirements as long as the student is subsequently admitted to a graduate nursing program and obtains a grade of B (3.0 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale) in those classes. The list of upper division elective courses can be obtained from SVSU’s RN to BSN Coordinator.

One statistics course from the following or an approved transfer equivalent course:

Required SVSU Core Nursing Courses (15-credits)
