Saginaw Valley State University’s Accelerated Certification with Residency (ACR) program

Secondary Requirements

I. Admission

1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.

2. Minimum 3.0 grade point average (based on 4.00 scale) for students completing degrees in the past four years.

3. Passing scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC).

4. Successful interview into the College of Education Teacher Education Program.

A College of Education advisor will meet with candidates to help determine possible content areas. If candidates have not met the requirements for a major as part of their degree, they must complete these courses in addition to the professional studies requirements of the ACR program. Candidates must pass the MTTC content area test to be certified to teach in that content area.

II. Secondary Professional Studies Courses

The College of Education creates the schedule of ARC courses offered each semester to ensure that accelerated certification candidates can complete the required course work in one year. Candidates do not create their own schedules. These courses are taken concurrently with a full year of student teaching or residency in a middle or high school classroom.
