Elementary Accelerated Certification with Residency

Saginaw Valley State University’s Elementary Accelerated Certification with Residency (ACR) program is for those with bachelor’s degrees or higher who want to obtain teaching certification in the state of Michigan. The residency component allows for student teaching for an entire academic year.

I. Admission


  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution
  2. Minimum 3.0 grade point average (based on 4.00 scale) for students completing degrees in the past four years
  3. SAT taken on or after March 5, 2016, with scores of:
    • 480 or higher on the Evidence Based Reading & Writing section, and
    • 530 or higher on the Mathematics section or MI Dept. of Ed-approved alternative pass measures or admission requirements
  4. Successful interview into the College of Education Teacher Education Program
     

The application for admission to SVSU and the Elementary Accelerated Certification with Residency (ACR) Program is located online at www. svsu. edu/graduateprograms. The application and official transcripts from each college/university attended must be received in the College of Education by June 30th for the next academic year. This program requires a full year of residency/student teaching in a K-8 classroom. Teacher candidates placed in a content-specific residency are required to complete a minimum number of field hours per core subject (i. e., Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies).

Any additional course work to fulfill content area requirements must also be completed prior to completing this program.

II. Elementary Program


A College of Education advisor will meet with each candidate to review transcripts, professional experiences, and goals and work with the candidate to help identify a content major. If the candidate does not have the equivalent of a major in transcripted credit in the area in which he/she wishes to be certified, the candidate will be required to attempt the appropriate content area MTTC. If the candidate does not pass, he/she can again meet with the College of Education advisor with testing results to receive prescribed resources to gain knowledge needed to pass the exam.

Grade Point Average Requirement

Students in the Accelerated Certification with Residency program will be required to maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3. 00 in all professional studies courses to successfully complete the program.

Students failing to maintain the required GPA may be dismissed from the program, subject to an appeal. Information for an appeals process may be obtained from the dean’s office.

Residency/Student Teaching

The professional studies courses must be concurrent with a full year of residency/student teaching. This program requires a full year of residency/student teaching in a K-8 classroom. Teacher candidates placed in a content-specific residency are required to complete a minimum number of field hours per core subject (i. e., Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies). Any additional course work to fulfill content area requirements must also be completed prior to completing this program.

TE 417R, TE 418R, TE 494R, TE 497R, and TE 498R are graded on a pass/fail basis. Evaluations are made and kept on file in the College of Education Office.

Residency/student teaching assignments are routinely made only for the traditional academic year including fall and winter semesters.

Note: It is particularly important that students placed in a residency/student teaching assignment immediately notify the Office of Clinical Experiences when they are not able to fulfill their placement obligation. When a student drops residency/student teaching without approval of the Office of Clinical Experiences, he/she will not be given a residency/student teaching assignment during the following semester or academic year. When this student reapplies, he/she may be asked to appear for a formal hearing of the College of Education Admissions and Transitions Committee.

III. Elementary Courses


The College of Education creates the schedule of courses offered each semester to ensure that accelerated certification candidates can complete the required course work in one year. Candidates do not create their own schedules.

Elementary ACR Professional Studies Courses (30 cr)


This program requires a full year of residency/student teaching in a K-8 classroom. Teacher candidates placed in a content-specific residency are required to complete a minimum number of field hours per core subject (i. e., Reading, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies)..

Any additional course work to fulfill content area requirements must also be completed prior to completing this program.

Fall:

(16 credits; prerequisite is admission to the Elementary ACR Program)

Note: TE 494R Seminar 1 is mandatory, and will be scheduled to be completed at the start of the program.

Winter:

(14 credits, prerequisite is successful completion of TE 411R, TE417R, and TE 497R)

TE 414R Teaching Elementary Science (3 credits)

TE 418R Seminar 3 for Elementary ACR (1 credit)
