This course of study is designed to meet the State of Michigan requirements for teacher certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) for PreK-12 at the undergraduate level. To obtain the endorsement, students must complete the requirements as given below, pass the certification test (NS) in this area, and obtain a Michigan teaching certificate.

Grade point requirement:

Candidates must maintain a minimum “B” (3.0) grade point average in all ESL Core Courses in order to be eligible to enroll in the teaching practicum (ENGL 496).

Language requirement:

Candidates for the PreK-12 ESL endorsement must fulfill a second/additional language requirement. This can be fulfilled by two semesters of college study in a single language other than English, or by demonstrating literacy and fluency in a language other than English. Candidates for whom English is an additional language will meet the English language proficiency requirement through successful completion of this program.
