The English Language Arts Major for Teacher Certification helps prepare students to teach English Language Arts at the secondary level and is restricted to students who are seeking secondary teacher certification.
To complete this major, students must also gain admission to the College of Education and complete the program in Teacher Education Secondary: Grades 5-12 in Grades 5-9, Grades 7-12, or Grades 5-12 . Enrolling in the English Language Arts Major does not constitute admission to the College of Education.
In addition to the requirements for the program in Teacher Education Secondary: Grades 5 to 12, a student in the English Language Arts Major for Teacher Certification must complete a set of specific General Education courses as part of their broader General Education requirements, a core of required courses, at least one set of grade band requirements, and specific ELA methods courses that can only be taken after the student is admitted to the College of Education and that include field work.
