International Studies Major (B.A.)

Along with Study Abroad opportunities, the objective of this interdisciplinary major is to provide students with an understanding of the world through its varied cultures, customs, languages, and traditions. Courses in this major are taken from the following departments within the College of Arts and Behavioral Sciences and the College of Business and Management: Accounting, Law and Finance, Art, Communication, Criminal Justice, Economics, English, Geography, History, Management and Marketing, Modern Foreign Languages, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Rhetoric and Professional Writing, and Sociology. This major prepares students for graduate work or for work in a variety of areas within the increasingly interdependent world. Students select one of three emphases: 1) Asian Studies or 2) European Studies or 3) Latin American Studies. A minor is required.

The major consists of six elements described below:
A. Foreign Language Competency
B. Foundation Courses - 15 credits
C. Extended Core - 18 credits
D. Research Methods - 3 credits
E. Area Concentration - 9 credits
F. Capstone - 3 credits
Major Requirements (48 cr)
A. Foreign Language Competency
Demonstrated fourth semester competency. B. Foundation Courses (15 cr)
C. Extended Core Courses (18 cr)
Special Topics (e.g., 390/490 courses) may be taken as a substitute for other courses based on topics offered; coordinator approval required.
Courses transferred in from Study Abroad experiences may be applied up to 6 credits to the Extended Core; coordinator approval required.
D. Research Methods (3 cr)
E. Area Concentration (9 cr required from one emphasis)
1. Asian Studies Emphasis (9 cr, at least 6 cr at 300-400 level):
Special Topics (e.g., 390/490 courses) may be taken as a substitute for other courses based on topics offered; coordinator approval required.
Courses transferred in from Study Abroad experiences may be applied up to 3 credits to the Asian Studies emphasis; coordinator approval required.
2. European Studies Emphasis (9 cr, at least 6 cr at the 300-400 level)
Special Topics (e.g., 390/490 courses) can be taken as a substitute for other courses based on topics offered; coordinator approval required.
Courses transferred in from Study Abroad experiences may be applied up to 3 credits to the European Studies emphasis; coordinator approval required.
3. Latin American Studies Emphasis (9 cr, at least 6 cr at the 300-400 level)
Special Topics (e.g., 390/490 courses) can be taken as a substitute for other courses based on topics offered; coordinator approval required.
Courses transferred in from Study Abroad experiences may be applied up to 3 credits to the Latin American Studies emphasis; coordinator approval required.
4. Other Area Concentrations (9 approved cr)
Students with exceptional study abroad experience may, with the approval of the International Studies Coordinator, design a major to incorporate courses they have taken elsewhere. Examples of such areas might include Africa and the Middle East. F. Capstone Course (3 cr)
Students will take an appropriate capstone course for their concentration or complete one independent study project or internship in their chosen field of study. Any Capstone course, project or internship must be pre-approved by the International Studies coordinator. |
