Return to: Programs
This course of study is designed to meet the State of Michigan requirements for teacher certification in English as a Second Language (ESL) at the undergraduate level. To obtain the corresponding endorsement, students must complete the requirements of the Elementary, Seconday, or K-12 programs as given below, pass the certification test (NS) in this area, and obtain a Michigan teaching certificate. All courses in these ESL program minors are approved by the State of Michigan for their respective endorsements.
Grade point requirement: Candidates must maintain a minimum “B” (3.0) grade point average in all ESL Core Courses in order to be eligible to enroll in the teaching practicum (ENGL 496 ).
Language requirement: Candidates for ESL endorsements must fulfill a second/additional language requirement. This can be fulfilled by two semesters of college study in a single language other than English, or by demonstrating literacy and fluency in a language other than English. Candidates for whom English is an additional language will meet the English language proficiency requirement through successful completion of this program.
