Leadership & Service Minor

An interdisciplinary minor comprised of courses from the departments of Communication,Criminal Justice, Economics,History, Management, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Rhetoric & Professional Writing, and Sociology. The Leadership & Service Minor is designed to educate students for and about leadership. Students will gain knowledge through core coursework,supplemental coursework, and capstone activities. 

The objectives of this minor are to:  

1. Gain an understanding of perspectives about leadership and public service including frameworks, theory and practice, styles and models.

2. Develop an evolving personal definition of what it means to lead and the role of personal responsibility in leadership and public service throughout the course sequence of the program.

3. Gain an understanding of leadership and public service opportunities at Saginaw Valley State University and the Great Lakes Bay Region community.

4. Learn how to engage with others in order to affect change.

5. Apply knowledge of leadership and public service in real-life settings.

6. Understand the role of ethics, democratic citizenship, and social change in leadership and public service.

7. Demonstrate critical thinking through oral and written communication skills.

8. Prepare to become responsible citizens in a diverse, democratic society.

The Leadership & Service Minor is an integrated, competency-based minor earned through the completion of 23 credits.This includes four 2-credit hour courses, a 3-credit capstone course, and 12 credits as distributed below. A minimum grade point average of 2.00 (“C”) is required for graduation. No “D” or “F” may be counted toward the minor.
