Endorsements–Spanish Minor for Elementary Education

In addition to the Elementary Education Major  requirements outlined under the Elementary Education Program (B.A.)  catalog entry, students may complete the following endorsement program for additional specialization. Endorsements to the elementary teaching certificate are in addition to the requirements under the Elementary Education Program (B.A.) , except where noted specifically.

Spanish Minor–Elementary Teaching Endorsement (23 cr)


Prerequisite: Admission to the Elementary Teacher Education Program .

This course of study is designed to meet the state of Michigan requirements for an endorsement to teach Spanish at grades 6-8. To obtain this endorsement, students must complete all of the requirements for the Elementary Education Program (B.A.)  and the requirements for this program, pass the certification test for Elementary Education and the certification test for Spanish at the initial level of certification earned: Elementary (K-8); this is not a K-12 endorsement.

Candidates must also meet the oral proficiency requirement.

Courses in Beginning and Intermediate Spanish may not be used toward this minor.

Electives (3-4 cr)


One additional course from the Required Electives listed above, or from the following list, to total 20 credits of Spanish at the 300-400 level.

Oral Proficiency Requirement


Candidates for the elementary endorsement in Spanish must take an interim test of oral language proficiency within one semester of completing SPAN 302  , Spanish Conversation. Candidates must also pass the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) with a minimum rating of Advanced Low.

MTTC Subject-Area Test


Elementary Education Majors who choose to add the endorsement in Spanish and wish to become authorized to teach Spanish in grades 6-8, should plan to take the MTTC “Spanish” subject-area test prior to or during student teaching. (Note: scores must be submitted to SVSU electronically. Please select institution code #24 when registering for testing. See MTTC website for details www.nesinc.com.)
