The MAT-Physical Education is intended for individuals who are already endorsed in Physical Education Teacher Education. This program emphasizes pedagogy and is designed for physical education teachers who wish to improve and expand professional teaching skills, and develop supervision competencies. Practitioners enrolled in this program are typically interested in continuing a teaching career and potentially supervising undergraduate students during physical education fieldwork. There are two cognates within this program: Curriculum and Instruction and Adapted Physical Activity.
Those completing the Adapted Physical Activity cognate may assume any or all of the following roles: direct service provider (hands-on teaching); consultant for physical education and special education staff providing educational instruction for individuals with disabilities; Individual Education Plan (IEP) Committee member who helps develop the IEP in the psychomotor domain; inservice educator, providing training for people who will provide physical education instruction for individuals with disabilities; student and parent advocate; program coordinator who develops curricular materials, develops intra and inter-agency collaboratives to meet the needs of individuals with disabilities, and monitors progress on IEP’s.
This Adapted Physical Education Cognate meets all State of Michigan Physical Education for Students with Disabilities endorsement requirements. Further, completion of the program meets the Adapted Physical Education national standard requirements preparing candidates for the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) examination.
