Teacher Certification Programs

Initial Teacher Certification (Post Baccalaureate)

The SVSU College of Education offers a traditional and accelerated teacher preparation program (ACE) for post-baccalaureate students who wish to complete university and state requirements to obtain a Michigan teaching certification at the elementary level (grade K-8) and at the secondary level (grades 6-12 or K-12). All interested candidates for either the traditional program or the ACE program must attend an informational seminar prior to scheduling an appointment with a certification advisor in the College of Education. The seminar dates are available online at http://www.svsu.edu/partnership/title2/ace/. Please contact the College of Education Admissions and Certification Office for additional information.

Applicants who hold a baccalaureate degree and wish to complete requirements for teacher certification may have two options: the “Accelerated Certification (ACE)” or “Traditional Certification.” Both programs require Elementary and Secondary candidates to fulfill requirements in the content majors and/or minors in addition to completing the Professional Studies (methods) course requirements.

The ACE Program provides Elementary and Secondary Education students with an intensive year-long, fulltime field experience which encompasses student teaching and substitute teaching during the day. Additionally, students will be required to successfully complete Professional Studies courses that will be offered at times beyond the K-12 school day. Students must have completed or nearly-completed minors (Elementary), or majors and minors (Secondary) to enter the program.

The Traditional Certification Program allows Elementary students to complete the requirements for the Professional Studies courses in four semesters culminating with a 14 week student teaching assignment.

Secondary students will complete the Secondary Professional Studies courses in three semesters culminating with a 14 week student teaching assignment.

All candidates for ACE or Traditional Certification must meet requirements for admission to the Teacher Education Program.

Note:
For Students interested in Special Education endorsement: A Special Education endorsement (Emotional or Cognitive Impairment) requires an additional 31-33 credit hours of Special Education course work and a semester of Special Education student teaching, including seminar. Endorsement in Learning Disabilities is not available as an initial endorsement. Students are required to seek advisement with a Certification Advisor, followed by advisement with a Special Education faculty member.

Accelerated Certification Program


Elementary Requirements


I. Admission


  1. Earned bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  2. GPA of 2.75 minimum (based on 4.00 scale) for the most recent 60 credit hours
  3. An Introduction to Teaching course with a grade of “C” or better
  4. A General Psychology course with a grade of “C” or better
  5. Passing scores on the Michigan Test for Teacher Certification (MTTC) Basic Skills Test
  6. Successful interview into the College of Education

II. Elementary Program


Students in the ACE Elementary Education Program must have satisfied two academic minors in undergraduate degree work from the following four content areas listed below, and have completed twelve (12) credits each in the remaining two content areas. A College of Education advisor will meet with students to help determine possible minors.

English Minor (21 credits)
Math Minor (20-24 credits)
Natural Science Minor (24 credits)
Social Studies Minor (28 credits)

If students have not met these minor requirements as part of their undergraduate degree, then they must complete these minor courses in addition to the professional studies requirements of the ACE program.

III. Elementary Courses


The College of Education sets up the schedule of ACE courses offered each semester to ensure that accelerated certification students can complete the required course work in one year. Students do not draw up their own schedules.

Elementary ACE Professional Studies Courses:
Total Hours of Course Work: 50
Substitute Teaching Days: 52

Secondary Requirements


I. Admission

Biology, Chemistry, Communication & Theatre, English, French, History, Math, Physical Education, Physics, Social Studies, Spanish

Minors

Biology, Chemistry, Communication & Theatre, Computer Science, Economics, English, French, History, Math, Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, Spanish

If students have not met these major/minor requirements as part of their undergraduate degree, then they must complete these major/minor courses in addition to the professional studies requirements of the ACE program.

III. Secondary Courses


The College of Education sets up the schedule of ACE courses offered each semester to ensure that accelerated certification students can complete the required course work in one year. Students do not draw up their own schedules.

Secondary ACE Professional Studies Courses:
Total Hours of Course Work: 30 (Graduate Hours: 18)
Substitute Teaching Days: 56

Continuing Certification


Eighteen credits of planned programs are available for certified teachers seeking continuing certification. Candidates should see a certification advisor, College of Education, for further information and advisement.

Additional Endorsement Programs

Additional endorsements in Computer Science, English as a Second Language and content area major and minor subject areas are available for certified teachers through the College of Education. Candidates should schedule an appointment with a certification advisor in the College of Education, for information and advisement.
