Pre-Health Professions: Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Optometry, Pharmacy, Chiropractic, and Physician Assistant


Saginaw Valley State University offers all courses and advisement necessary to prepare the student for admission to health professional schools, including but not limited to medical, dental, veterinary, optometry, pharmacy, chiropractic, and physician assistant school. Any major is acceptable when applying to health professional schools provided the student has completed the prerequisite courses. Entrance requirements for professional schools do vary, however, the following serves as the minimum for most schools: one year of general chemistry, one year of organic chemistry, one year of biology, one year of physics and one year of English. (CHEM 111, CHEM 111L, CHEM 112, CHEM 112L, CHEM 230, CHEM 231, CHEM 330, CHEM 331, BIOL 181, BIOL 181L, BIOL 182, BIOL 182L, PHYS 111, PHYS 112, ENGL 111, ENGL 212) Students interested in professional healthcare careers are advised to choose one of the many major fields of study offered by Saginaw Valley State University. Majors such as chemistry, biochemistry or cell and molecular biology particularly lend themselves to satisfying the specific course requirements noted above; however, if these courses are taken as electives, any other major also is suitable.

Students interested in medicine and other health professional schools should be in contact with our Pre-Health Professions Advisor no later than their first semester of attendance at SVSU to discuss academic planning, admission exams, clinical experience, and more.
