English as a Second Language: Minor Endorsement


This course of study is designed to meet the state of Michigan requirements for teacher certification in English as a Second Language (ESL). To obtain this endorsement, students must complete the requirements of either the elementary or secondary programs as given below, pass the certification test in this area, and obtain a Michigan teaching certificate.

Students must achieve a minimum of a 2.75 (B-) grade point average of all TESOL practicum prerequisites (ENGL 244, ENGL 365, ENGL 465 or ENGL 565, ENGL 470 or ENGL 570) to be eligible for the TESOL practicum (ENGL 496 or ENGL 596).

Language Requirement: Two semesters of college-level language study in a single language other than English, or its equivalent. This requirement can be altered for native speakers of a language other than English. Students who are limited-English proficient must either complete a college-level oral communication class (COMM 105A recommended) with a minimum grade of B- (2.75), or achieve a minimum score of 20 on the listening and 20 on the speaking sections of the TOEFL iBT.
