  • EDL 712 - Advanced Public School Law


    This course addresses the body of constitutional, statutory, administrative and case law which controls the shared governance of public schools by local boards of education, the states and the Federal Government. Relevant Michigan and Federal laws and necessary board-adopted policies to control student discipline, curriculum, buildings and grounds, board of education activity and central office administration are included.

  • EDL 720 - Internship in Admin Specialty Area-I


    This course is the first half (fall term) of a year-long field experience in which participants are paired with practicing administrators as mentors. Emphasis is on shadowing routine, administrative functions and instructional leadership.

  • EDL 721 - Intern in Admn Spec Area II


    This course is the second half (winter term) of a year-long field experience in which participants further develop administrative skills by working with practicing administrators as mentors.     An examination of reflective practice as a productive and efficient strategy to improve individual administrator performance, teacher performance and school effectiveness. The course will cover the energy and environmental regulations addressing conventional fossil-fuel based electrical generating operations as well as traditional energy supply and distribution such as the electric power grid; coal mining, transport, and storage, oil exploration, recovery, transport and refining; and natural gas exploration, recovery and transport. This course will also cover alternate energy systems and the applicable regulatory requirements impacting the design, development, installation and operation of solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, nuclear and biomass systems. Students will learn how to identify general legal issues related to energy systems and their environmental impacts. Students will also learn about the costs of energy production and usage. This course will examine the technical issues that must be addressed in order to obtain the permits and necessary licenses to install and operate electrical generating systems and other energy sources. In addition to the legal issues, the course will also address ethical issues related to the use and depletion of natural resources as well as the actual and potential environmental harm caused by energy related operations.

    Course examines the design and implementation of human resource strategies and systems within organizations in the public and non-profit sectors. Employment law is covered as it applies to the motivation, education and professional development of human performance potential and realization as well as the recruitment, hiring, training and evaluation of staff. Related topics will include compliance, diversity, labor relations, employee benefit programs and staffing issues and strategies. An emphasis will be placed on the role of administrative decision-making in the context of staff and organizational development.
